This lecture series examines our object of study from very different perspectives. A central perspective is that of corpus-based translation studies, which investigates translation phenomena in large databases. The main focus here is to describe these phenomena and the amount of data makes it possible to generalize across multiple text types, language combinations or historical/social contexts.Another aspect is experimental research, which tries to keep as many aspects constant as possible in order to manipulate a few so that they can be isolated experimentally. Research into the role of the multilingualism of interpreters and translators is often a priority here.
The historical developments and contexts in which translation was often understood, practiced and received very differently is a further perspective, which also provides a new understanding of the current contexts in which translation is understood, practiced and received.
At the center of these lectures are three questions: What are we researching? Why are we doing this? And perhaps the most important question is: How do we research what we research?
