The lecture deals with the question of what the differences are between human and artificial intelligence, what information is, how people generally interact with information, how plausible (large) language models are as models of human language processing, but will also contextualize current developments by using older methods of mathematical representation of language by examining these in comparison to current methods. Central topics will be pattern recognition and ergodicity - what assumptions underlie them, how they are implemented and what consequences this has for our understanding of language and cognition. The very real dangers associated with current models will also be considered, particularly in light of the legal, social and economic consequences of current and future upheavals.Dates
