At best, barrier-free communication means ensuring accessibility to information for all people equally by trying to overcome corresponding communication barriers (Disability Equality Act § 4).In the context of audiovisual translation, subtitling, for example, offers a way to overcome these barriers for hearing-impaired people. Comprehensibility-optimised language varieties such as Easy or Plain Language can facilitate access to information for people with different reading skills.
In this course, both strands are brought together and the theoretical foundations for both comprehension-optimised language and audiovisual translation with a focus on subtitling are being worked out.
In small groups, videos are then subtitled with the help of subtitling software in an addressee and practice-oriented way on the basis of certain style guides and criteria. The results are presented in a small speed presentation at the end of the project week.
This course is taught as part of the project week together with the seminar of the same name held by Ms Tardel (06.843.0822).
