Translators have special skills. They are able to switch back and forth between two languages and produce idiomatic translations even though the source language is always present. But how well can the influence of the source language really be prevented?
This course consists of two parts, one theoretical and one practical. In the theoretical part, we will first examine the questions of how the influence between two languages can look like, how it can be explained from a cognitive point of view, and which particularities apply to translators in comparison to other bilinguals.
In the practical part, a small study with translators will be conducted to examine the influence of syntactic structures from English on German in translation. This study expands on an existing study of bilingual non-translators, so that it can ultimately be examined whether there are differences between bilinguals and translators in this area.
This course is part of a larger teaching project consisting of a undergraduate seminar and a graduate seminar. In the first part of the semester, the undergraduate seminar and graduate seminar will participate in class together. In this way, the advantages of peer teaching will be exploited: Students should benefit from the heterogeneous composition of the course.
In the second part of the course, the groups are then divided into Bachelor and Master. The bachelor's group will learn the basics of scientific and empirical work, in particular how to write a term paper. The Master students dive deeper into the subject matter. They deal in more detail with statistical basics and various methods of data analysis, which are applied in particular to the data of the study carried out.
At the end of the course, the development and results of this project will be compiled and presented.
The form of examination is a term paper based on the study carried out.
