In this seminar you will explore the question of how Kafka’s The Metamorphosis (1912) has been transformed in translations across time and target languages or not. You will acquire theoretical and empirical tools with which these transformations can be studied. You will learn how to quantify these changes using cross-linguistic semantic models. Specifically, you will use models from, e.g., Google or Facebook, with which the cross-linguistic similarities can be quantified on a sentence-by-sentence basis, which in turn makes it possible to investigate how this similarity changes over time in different translations of the same and other target languages. No previous programming experience is required. The question of how similar two sentences are in different languages has long been a central topic in translation studies – now it is possible to quantify this similarity across languages. On the one hand, we will study theoretical aspects of cross-linguistic semantic models and on the other hand, we will study how these models can be used in Translation Studies, we will apply them to existing translations and thus open up new possibilities of interpretation. Active participation (weekly readings and a mini-term paper) and a small research paper are necessary to pass.Anwesenheitspflicht
