Ü Intra- und interlinguale KI-gestützte Untertitlungsworkflows

Instructors: Anke Tardel
Shortname: 06.008.0140
Course No.: 06.008.0140
Course Type: Übung

Requirements / organisational issues

No previous knowledge in Audiovisual Translation or subtitling required. This course may still be of interest to students already bringing some experience as we will be testing different workflows.

Software that will be used:

Subtitle Edit or Subtitle Workshop:
At the beginning of the semester, we will work with the subtitling software Subtitle Edit or Subtitle Workshop (both freely available online)::

  1. https://nikse.dk/subtitleedit
  2. http://subworkshop.sourceforge.net/

During the course of the semester we will also talk about other professional subtitling software and compare different features.

To work with the software, you may use the computers provided in the CAFL computer labs on which Subtitle Workshop is installed, or you may download the software Subtitle Edit to your laptop/computer.

Please note: Like almost all subtitling programs, the above software work only on Windows computers (not Apple MacBooks or Apple iMacs). Students with an Apple device can use the subtitling program Aegisub, but they would need to learn how it works on their own.

MS Teams:
We will use MS Teams to share the media and submit the created subtitles. More information on this will be discussed in the first session..

Anwesenheitspflicht

To pass the course, active and regular participation as well as regular submission and presentation of prepared subtitles is required.

If a grade is required, the last three captioning performances will be graded according to the criteria previously discussed in class. Further information on this will be discussed in the first sessions.

Erasmus students and listening students (Hörer) are generally welcome. However, if the course becomes too large, the instructor reserves the right not to admit Erasmus students and listening students in order to concentrate on the regular students

Digital teaching

In general no, but possible if necessary.

Contents

Subtitling requires technical but also translation expertise. The complexity of audiovisual media requires a specific approach to the text and image while considering the intended viewers and genre of the subtitled programme.

Besides traditional manual subtitle creation, more and more AI-assisted tools are used to improve subtitle production processes which is also reflected in the industry. It is, however, not quite clear which tool works best in which use case and where does it not work at all?

In the course we will discuss general technical-formal basics as well as create subtitles. Subtitles are usually made after class time and discussed in class. Besides traditional subtitle production workflows we will also introduce AI-assisted workflows, test them and discuss them in class by comparing the efficiency of individual tasks with and without AI-assistance.

The audiovisual source materials are short videos in German or English that are subtitled in German or English. Intralingual subtitles are usually created for viewers with hearing impairments who use the subtitles to understand the spoken content of a video. Also interlingual subtitles where the original sound is in a different language than the subtitles can be prepared with different target groups in mind. The interlingual subtitle production workflows will be contrasted in both directions EN-DE/DE-EN.

In addition to the successful creation of subtitles in German for German-language videos as well as interlingual subtitles DE<>EN of different length and thematic focus, the course is devoted to basic practical as well as theoretical topics:

  1. The software: Subtitle Workshop and Subtitle Edit (Download and Installation)
  2. Getting to know the basic functions and features of the software
  3. Subtitling basics: What is audiovisual translation? What is subtitling? What are the different types of subtitling?
  4. Basics of prepared intralingual subtitling: history, target viewers, special considerations
  5. Basics of prepared interlingual subtitling: differences to intralingual subtitling
  6. Subtitle production workflows: roles, skills, and AI-assisted tools and when to use them
  7. General strategies, hints and guidelines
