In this seminar you will explore how Kafka's The Metamorphosis (1912) has or has not changed in translations in different time periods and target languages. You will acquire theoretical and empirical tools with which these transformation processes can be examined. On the one hand, you will learn that target texts can be compared with their respective source texts with regard to very different characteristics and that the transformations observed in the comparison are not always due to purely linguistic or structural differences. We will try to expand our repertoire of explanations for observable transformations of the "Metamorphosis" through readings and discussions. On the other hand, you will learn how to use cross-language semantic models to quantify these changes. Concretely, you will use models from e.g. Google or Facebook, with which the cross-language similarities can be calculated on a sentence-by-sentence basis, which in turn makes it possible to examine how this similarity changes over time in different translations of the same and other target languages. No previous knowledge of programming is required, but an interest in the mathematical representation of language is assumed.Dates
