This lecture provides an overview of the research that deals with the question of how bilinguals in general and translators in particular, deal with ambiguities. The need to take decisions during translation has far-reaching theoretical and practical consequences. These are outlined, but the focus is on the automatic rather than the conscious decisions that bilingual and translators take.
