Research shows that bilingual translators are superior to monolingual translators in certain areas. This includes, above all, cognitive control, which is necessary, for example, to quickly switch from one task to another (task-switching). Translators read and write and these two tasks are performed in quick succession and often overlap. It can therefore be assumed that translators have a further advantage in this respect compared to bilingual translators who have no translation experience.This advantage of bilingual translators arises from the fact that they must constantly use two languages and prevent the two languages from mixing or being activated simultaneously. The conflict between the two languages and the competition between them means that bilinguals and translators constantly train control mechanisms and are therefore superior to monolinguals.
If translation is simple, then the simultaneous activation of source and target languages is conducive - translators can often read and write at the same time.
However, when translating, it can also happen that the task, at a certain point in time, strains the available capacities of the working memory because a problem that has arisen is particularly complex.
In this practice class you will deal with the question of the role of working memory, the coactivation of the two languages and the role of mental control in translation.
You will collect eyetracking and keylogging data yourself, you will learn how to prepare these data for analysis and you will learn how to analyze them statistically. You will also learn how to report results. You will be required to actively participate.
